Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Video review technology will be launched at The Championships this year.
Athletes will gain the right to question particular decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.
Case in Point
A recent case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
