The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Partnership Forged By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of leading political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
