The speculation about The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing suggests that the team could be crafting a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it sparked the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—traits that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities you can achieve if you're playing as a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully open-ended, letting players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be approached in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can get ready for more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
