Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while different voices expressed frustration over how heavy censorship portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Administration Defends Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department officials justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a President or the Justice Department been this open with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo describing the censorship procedure.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and likeness appear in portions of the documents, the extensive black blocks prompt serious concerns about the information may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans swiftly called for greater transparency.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the statute, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump egregiously does not adhere to both the intent and the wording of the act,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Release
However, some conservative commentators and former President loyalists came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a DOJ run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are entirely censored, and many of the men depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.
But some do not, featuring prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled some conservative voices to go on the attack.
“It’s quite rich how the Democrats falsely claimed President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Issues Response
Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been concealing these documents for months only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photos as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response added.
Broader Rightwing Comment Remains Muted
Nonetheless, broader discourse on the right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous demands for transparency that preceded the congressional approval to enact a bill mandating the documents' release.
The commentator, who recently secured media access at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a complete release. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing influencers were provided hard-copy binders of files that contained little new information.
