Seven alleged members of Germany's far-left group stand trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist group along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the network was behind attacks on locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the US decision and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or are in custody.”
