Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
